Fume Extraction
A fume cupboard is a large piece of equipment that is common to find in a medical, chemical or biological laboratory. They were invented over time to protect lab workers and scientists that handle hazardous materials from toxic fumes. You can also refer to them as chemical hoods, fume hoods, fume cabinets and film filtration cabinets. The first ones ever were wood. Over time epoxy coated mild steel has become the preferred construction material for this type of fume extraction.
There are two main types of fume hood which are ductless fume hoods and filtered fume hoods. In historic versions of the ductless hood it originally had a vent pipe made from asbestos. Due to the dangerous nature of asbestos, the vent pipe is now PVC or polypropylene.
Due to specific requirements in scientific research, the need for different types of fume cupboards have been essential. This means the original fume cupboard has had slight modifications for alternate uses. Specific types of fume cupboards for special fume filtrating proposes have been a development by manufacturers. These include perchloric acid, low flow/high performance, water wash fume cupboards & scrubber fume cupboards.
