The eco system is reliant on one of its most important factors – mould. It helps to recycle and break down dead leaves and organic matter. Unfortunately, mould can do so much good for the environment outside but when it is found inside, can do so much harm to humans and damage to building structures. Workplace mould can be especially harmful to your health and buisness. Mould grows by producing small spores which are dispersed through the air and are looking for places which are a good source of food and moisture. Surfaces such as soil, wood, paper, cardboard, fabric and dry walls are ideal.
When in contact with humans’ mould can pose a high health risk. People with allergies, diabetes, poor immune systems, asthma, hay fever and bronchitis are at a higher risk of reacting to mould. Common reactions to mould include congestion, asthma aggravation, rashes, coughs, eye irritation and a runny nose. Symptoms usually disappear after the mould exposure stops.
What to look for?
Knowing what to look for is a good place to start. All mould needs water to grow. Buildings that are prone to leaks, floods, condensation or that have had fires are particularly susceptible to mould growth. Moisture problems should be the focus of assessment and control efforts to prevent mould. If a mould effected area is disturbed, it can make mould spores airborne which, can be breathed in by humans. This is called exposure.
Cleaning mould is a hard and sometimes costly job. It has many methods specific to each particular case. Wet vacuums can be used to draw up excess water from floors and materials. Damp wipes can remove mould without too much mould getting airborne but it is recommended to wear respirators. Products such as house hold bleach can be used as a preventative measure by scrubbing the affected area. The most important thing is to make sure the surface dries and to keep it that way. In some cases where sewerage is involved or it is very extensive damage, the only way to remove it is by contacting a qualified professional.
Some tips for mould prevention include regular inspections, proper maintenance of HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system, venting moisture generating appliances outside, proper ventilation for kitchens and bathrooms and adequate drainage surrounding buildings.
