Autumn is coming to an end and we are entering into winter. It also brings with it a new set of hazards that can impact us in the work place. Rain, storms and strong winds all pose a threat to our safety and especially to construction workers. If we can recognise the risks we can learn how to manage them accordingly.
The most anticipated danger in the wet weather is from slips, trips and falls. Rain can cause slippery surfaces, limited visibility and debris. Wearing appropriate rain gear and ensuring tools and equipment are rated for outdoor use are some tips for working in the wet weather. Try to move cautiously and ensure adequate vision before commencing an activity.
Visibility is a major concern while working in wet weather. There are some good ways to increase your work site visibility. One includes spraying your safety glasses with anti-fog spray. Wear a hat to keep water out of your eyes. If visual capabilities are inhibited by the weather it could also be a good idea to stop the task until it can be improved. A good way to ensure you can be seen in inclement weather is to ensure you and your colleagues are wearing your high visibility clothing.
Driving in wet weather also poses a risk whether we are working, travelling to or from work or just doing it in our own time. First of all, it is a good idea to evaluate the need to be driving. If it is unnecessary then you should avoid it. If you cannot avoid driving then you should ensure you are aware of your surroundings, being courteous and cautious of other drivers. Keep an eye on the road ahead for debris, large puddles and other drivers. The faster you go, the harder it is to control your vehicle. The speed limit is set as a maximum, rather than a minimum guide. Reduce speeds in heavy rain and drive to the conditions. It is important you arrive to your destination safely – it is better to get there late than not at all.
Working in inclement weather poses many risks to your safety. Ensure you slow down and assess your situation before commencing any tasks so you can reduce your risk of accidents or injury.
