Most metals can be easily smudged or stained. When you invest in an appliance or product made from metal, it’s only human nature to want to keep it looking pristine and shiny. There are a few ways to keep your metals looking great. All it takes is a few simple tips to do the trick when cleaning metals.
Aluminium
Aluminium is a widely used metal. It does however, become dull overtime due to aluminium oxide build up on the surface. Soapy water usually does the trick but there are specialised aluminium cleaners you can buy. Never use baking soda as it damages this particular surface. If you want to make a cleaning product at home, you can try white vinegar and cream of tartar.
Copper
Copper doesn’t respond well to harsh chemicals. It tarnishes easily and becomes quite dull. Store bought cleaning products are the safest for copper but you can go down the home-made path. Either tomato sauce or a half-lemon that has been salted can be used. Rubbing gently can remove smudges and dirt.
Silver
Many products can be made with silver but most commonly jewellery. It is a precious metal and can be expensive when you are talking big quantities. It does tend to tarnish when it is put away in storage for a long time. Generally, a store-bought cleaning product will do the trick but you can also use toothpaste as long as it is non-abrasive.
Chrome
Who could go past a shiny chrome bumper, bike part or car rims? Such a spectacular surface but it can tarnish and corrode looking horrible. The best method of cleaning is with soap and water or white vinegar. The acidity in vinegar is perfect to remove stains and tarnish without corroding the surface. Rust can be removed rubbing aluminium foil and vinegar against the surface.
Stainless Steel
This is one of the most popular finishes for appliances in the kitchen. It is thought of as one of the most hygienic metals because it is used in sterile situations. It does smudge easily which makes it appear dirty and dull. There are a few ways to clean stainless steel. Water and a mild cleaner
Sometimes metals aren’t as tough as you think they are. Avoiding cleaning methods or cleaning instruments that could damage the surface or your metal.
