With your Easter holiday right around the corner, many of you will be gearing up to celebrate. Maybe you are planning to have a relaxing weekend with family and friends? While you are getting ready to let your hair down, take a moment to think. Having some Easter safety precautions in place may be key so your weekend doesn’t end in disaster.
While planning your Easter egg hunt it is wise to ensure the eggs you place are in safe places that cannot lead to injuries. The backyard is the better place to hold such an event. That way kids cannot come into contact with oncoming traffic or driveways. Make sure your hiding spots are not too high for kids to reach. Ensure your hiding spots aren’t in direct danger of snakes, wasps or insects and if you are holding the hunt at a park, ensure the eggs aren’t placed too far away from sight, so no one wanders off. Also, it is a good idea to keep chocolate out of reach of your precious pooches, as we all know – chocolate isn’t good for dogs.
There is nothing better than cranking up the BBQ on a long weekend. If this is your plan this Easter, try and do so safely. Make sure your BBQ is set up on a firm level base one metre away from all objects. Ensure people and children keep a safe distance away from the BBQ at all times. Never bring a BBQ inside – even if it is raining and always ensure there is a fire extinguisher or water available at all times.
A lot of families make the trip out of town on the Easter weekend. Keeping your family and friends safe is the main priority. Some tips include keeping to the speed limit, being cautious, not driving tired and not drinking and driving. When stopping the car, it is a good idea to lock your vehicle and not to leave valuables inside. Being a victim of a break in or an accident is probably not on your agenda.
When the celebrating begins it is usually accompanied by drinking alcohol for most of us. Statistics reveal that domestic violence increases during most holidays due to intoxication. Having a few too many can lead to alcohol fuelled aggression, fights and assaults. Try to space your drinks and watch out for your friends. Organise a designated driver and know when it’s time to call it a night.
By being aware of the risks, you can make sure your celebrations are fantastic memories and not terrible disasters. All of us here at WDIS wish you a safe and relaxing weekend. Happy Easter all!!
