A fume cupboard is a large piece of equipment found in a medical, chemical or biological laboratory. Their purpose is to protect lab workers and scientists that handle hazardous materials from toxic fumes. Other common names for fume cupboards are chemical hoods, fume hoods, fume cabinets and film filtration cabinets. Original fume cupboards were wooden but over time epoxy coated mild steel has become the preferred construction material.
There are 2 main types of fume hood which are ductless fume hoods and filtered fume hoods. In historic versions of the ductless hood it had a vent pipe made from asbestos. In more recent times PVC or polypropylene is what the vent pipe consists of.
Due to specific requirements in scientific research, the need for different types of fume cupboards have been essential. As a result, the original fume cupboard had modifications for alternate uses. Manufacturers have created specific types of fume cupboards for specialist fume filtration proposes. These include perchloric acid, low flow/high performance, water wash fume cupboards & scrubber fume cupboards.
